FAQ: Has ‘Speaking in Tongues’ Ceased?
FAQ: My coworker posed this question to me. Has Speaking in Tongues ceased? What is the purpose of speaking in tongues? Please help!!!
The coworker sounds like he may be Church of Christ. They teach that tongues have ceased, using
1 Corinthians 13:8, “Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.”
However, tongues have not ceased today. They are just ABUSED and MISUSED. The Lord told the disciples that they shall speak with new tongues.
“And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues” (Mark 16:17).
And from the epistles of St. Paul, it is evident that this prophecy does not refer to Acts 2 alone. We read in 1 Corinthians 12:10 that in the apostolic Church, spiritual gifts included that of tongues:
“To another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.”
(1 Cor. 12:10).
1 Cor. 14:4 states that speaking in tongues edifies one’s spirit man. The Holy Spirit grants the gift of speaking in tongues to educate, empower and enlighten our walk with Jesus.”
1 Corinthians 14:2: “For he that speaks in an unknown tongue speaks not to men, BUT TO GOD: for no man understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.” Sometimes we don’t need to understand everything God is doing but when we pray in the Spirit, we are declaring the mysteries of God.
Romans 8:26: ” … For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit
prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. … ”
The gift of speaking in tongues is probably the most ABUSED of all of the gifts in Charismatic and Pentecostal churches. Mostly because of LACK OF TEACHING and UNDERSTANDING what the bible says about it.
1. Every Christian who is ‘filled’ with the Holy Ghost DO NOT have the GIFT OF TONGUES.
“And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondly prophets, thirdly teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, [divers] kinds of tongues.29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all [workers of] miracles?30 have all gifts of healings? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?31 But desire earnestly the greater gifts. And moreover a most excellent way show I unto you.
1 Cor. 12:28-31
2. It IS NOT biblical correct for the entire congregation to speak in tongues simultaneously.
27 If any man speaketh in a tongue, [let it be] by two, or at the most three, and [that] in turn; and let one interpret:28 but if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
1 Cor. 14:27,28
3. If you have the gift of tongues, whether you are at home privately or in a church, Paul instructs that you pray that you interpret what you are saying.
13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in a tongue pray that he may interpret.14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
1 Cor. 14:13-15
